If the pursuit of productivity can lead companies down a labyrinth of detours, for Bill Amalfitano it became a fairly straightforward question. Was it possible to trim the distance a crystal traveled in his Wilton factory from a winding course six-plus miles long to a relatively straight lane of 60 yards as the crystal was honed and polished into an optical component?  (read more)
